Cactiva

2024

A short-lived attempt at a Houseplant eCommerce business I built in 2024, targeting budget-conscious college students with easy-to-care-for arid plants.

The Thesis

My thesis started with learning that the houseplant industry has a projected CAGR of ~5% over the next decade, driven primarily through Health & Wellness trends amongst Millennials and GenZ, along with strong social media presence from houseplant influencers. That increase in demand, combined with continued growth in eCommerce, made GenZ and Gen Alpha (eCommerce natives) an excellent target population.

Market Opportunity

Existing Houseplant eCommerce brands like Bloomscape and heyrooted.com have eye-watering prices, with medium-sized houseplants regularly exceeding $100. The goal was to target college-aged individuals who have limited transportation, limited budget, and few plant nursery options in their college towns.

The Approach

Given their busy schedules, I planned on selling primarily easy-to-care-for arid plants like aloe vera, jade plants, snake plants, pothos, and cacti (thus the name, Cactiva). I signed an agreement with House Plant Wholesale, a dropshipping-capable plant nursery that would handle order fulfillment, and stood up a Shopify site using the domain cactiva.co.

Why It Failed

Cheap prices were the main differentiator, but prohibitive shipping costs routinely ran into the $20-30 range for relatively small plants, making the economics impossible at the 20% cost margins I was attempting. Playing the price game is difficult—the scale required to make cheap pricing a functional business exceeded what I was prepared to invest. No marketing plan was executed, and I shut down the project in early 2025.

Key Learnings

The biggest lesson: unit economics must work before you scale. Dropshipping works for lightweight, high-margin products—live plants with their shipping complexity and fragility are a poor fit for this model at small scale. The experience reinforced the importance of validating logistics costs early in any eCommerce venture.
